Sometimes, smaller things become bigger and bigger, like the Cat in the Hat and the pink stain that started out as a ring on the bathtub and turned the whole house pink. Thing 1 and Thing 2 become 3, 4, 5, 6, 7… As a mother of three and the owner of five cats, I can relate! Ready to tackle the mess? Here are some tips on how I get any home under control.

Living Room / General

Floorboards: Use foaming wall cleaner on the base boards, letting that soak. Then, grab a rag and wipe down the baseboards.

Floors: Next, I use an extra strength degreaser that gets mixed with water. I’ve never had a problem with damaging the floor, for instance if the floor has been waxed, and you want the wax to remain.

Red Stains: For real though – Dr. Seuss knew exactly what he was talking about with that pink stain! Spilled some red wine? Kids got into your lipstick? Hydrogen Peroxide will neutralize the color. Add a little dish soap for tougher stains.

Kitchen

Sink: Got some brown gunk around the rim of your drain? Mix together some baking soda and lemon juice, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then scrub with an old toothbrush.

Fridge: Tackle one shelf at a time throughout the week, going through expired items and leftovers, and wiping down at the end. This breaks it up into a manageable commitment, and ensures that you are hitting every area of the fridge, including the condiments in the door that we always forget about!

Bathroom

Shower Doors and Mirrors: Quadruple zero wool pads will scrub off grime that is stuck on.

Toilets: I only use paper towels and OdoBan No Rinse in a spray bottle. It works wonders!

Organization: Put like with like – one section could be hair care for instance. Cleaning supplies could be another. As you organize, you will naturally find yourself throwing away the shampoo you never liked, or the nearly empty bottle.

The Little Things: Clean the Q-Tip holder, behind the toilet, the top of the toilet brush holder, etc. It freshens up the whole room.

Voom! No more Cat in the Hat messes in sight! I hope you can apply these behind-the-scenes tips to your space, and make your home a blissful place to be! If you want some extra hands, you can find my services here.
